"Levi Strauss & Co. is known for inventing the blue jeans in 1873. They continue to innovate and build on that first pair that was worn many generations ago. It all started when Levi Strauss and Jacob Davis acquired a U.S. patent on putting rivets in work pants.

In 1853 Strauss came to San Francisco to open a west coast location of his brother's dry goods business. Over the next twenty years, he grew his company into a successful business. One of his customers was local tailor Jacob Davis. He was asked by the wife of a labor worker if Davis could make her husband a pair of work pants that wouldn't fall apart. He came up with the idea of putting metal rivets at the pants' stress points to reinforce the seams. The pants were an instant hit! Davis decided to file a patent and go into business making these riveted work pants. He needed a financial backer and that's when Strauss was asked to join the endeavor.

Traditionally, work clothing was made of denim, just like the modern jean. However, they were called waist overalls until baby boomers adopted the term'˜jeans' in the 1960s. Around 1905 Levi Strauss & Co. introduces khaki pants and coats for office wear. Jeans were for manual labor due to their ruggedness and the company wanted to expand their business to include products for office workers.

Levi's also created the first pair of jeans for women. They were originally made for women who worked on ranches doing the work of a ranch hand.

The company was the first multinational apparel brand to establish labor rights, safety, health, and environmental standards for its vendors' factories. In the 1990s Levi Stauss & Co. became one of the top companies to work for and broke molds for equality standards both in the workplace and in its advertising.

Levi's most popular style is their 501 jean. It's their original cut and comes in a plethora of rinses. They have expanded to include all types of fits for men, women, and children. If you like bootcut jeans, Levi's 517 Slim Fit Bootcut Jeans are perfect for you. Each pair of jeans is required to meet the same quality standards that were set by the founders over 130 years ago."
