I’m a Country Cry-Baby

By kwinchester — October 25, 2011

Thank you, Dear Lord, for waterproof mascara.

A few days ago, I was watching videos on CMT and saw  Jason Aldean’s new video, Tatoos on This Town.  About halfway through the video, out of absolutely nowhere, I started crying.  Not tearing up… full out, wailing-like-a-little-baby CRYING.

Did I mention this was in a public place?  And by public place, I mean in front of all my co-workers?

Yep. Everyone I work with saw me completely bawling my eyes out over that darn Jason Aldean video.

A lot of people ask me just what’s so special about country music.  You know what i tell them?  Country music isn’t just music.  No sir.   It’s a lifestyle.  Where most pop music today is “made” and “manufactured,” country music (at least GOOD country music) is still grown.  It grows right along with the people who write the songs.  It’s not about tractors or horses or pretty girls or hound dogs.  It’s about that slow pace of life that allows you the time to actually reflect on the “hows” and “whys” of life.  It’s that pace that lets you pull back and appreciate just how meaningful relationships still are.  It’s not just about that one pretty girl who the singer fell in love with…it’s about all those memories and that connection and that life that the singer and his love spent together.  It’s about the heartache of relationships and growing pains, and the healing that comes pouring down when we are most lonesome.  And a lot of times, it’s just about celebrating the wonder all around.

In a nutshell, country music is all about relationships.  As it turns out, this is a perfect reflection of life.

So if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to need to go grab a Kleenex and dab my eyes for a second.  Maybe I should make a mental note not to talk about songs that make me cry from now on?  Maybe ya’ll could help me feel a little better…what country song makes you get all misty-eyed and why?  Share with me on Twitter or Facebook…I’d love to see if anyone else has this reaction when they hear a song like Tatoos on This Town.
